When photographers argue about cameras, they are often really arguing about sensor size. The dimensions of the light-gathering surface behind your lens influence field of view, depth of field, low-light performance, dynamic range, and cost more than almost any other single specification. Understanding the differences between full-frame, APS-C, and medium format helps you spend money where it actually improves your pictures.
What sensor size actually means
A sensor is the digital equivalent of a frame of film. A full-frame sensor measures roughly 36 x 24mm, the same dimensions as a frame of 35mm film. APS-C sensors are smaller, typically around 23.5 x 15.6mm (or 22.2 x 14.8mm on Canon bodies). Medium format digital sensors are larger than full-frame, commonly around 44 x 33mm, echoing the oversized negatives of medium format film cameras. Sensor size strongly affects the depth of field you can achieve at a given field of view. To frame the same subject the same way, a larger sensor requires you to either move closer or use a longer lens, both of which reduce depth of field. This is why full-frame and especially medium format images can render subjects with that creamy, shallow background separation that many portrait photographers prize. APS-C can still produce beautiful background blur, but at an equivalent framing it will show slightly more depth of field than full-frame at the same aperture.
Low-light performance and noise
Larger sensors generally handle low light better, though the reason is often misunderstood. It is not simply that bigger pixels are better. A larger sensor gathers more total light across its whole surface, and modern designs distribute that advantage well. In practice, a full-frame camera set to ISO 6400 will usually show cleaner shadows and smoother tones than an APS-C camera at the same ISO. Medium format extends this further, delivering exceptional tonal smoothness at moderate ISO values, though many medium format systems are less impressive at very high ISO because they prioritize resolution and dynamic range instead.
Dynamic range and tonal depth
Bigger sensors, particularly medium format, tend to offer wider dynamic range, meaning they can hold detail in bright highlights and deep shadows within a single frame. This is one reason commercial, landscape, and fine-art photographers gravitate toward medium format. The files simply have more room to breathe when you pull up shadows or recover highlights in editing.
Cost, size, and practicality
- APS-C: the most affordable and portable option. Bodies and lenses are lighter and cheaper, making it ideal for travel, street, and photographers on a budget.
- Full-frame: the balance point for most serious enthusiasts and professionals. Excellent image quality, a vast lens ecosystem, and reasonable size.
- Medium format: the premium tier. Superb image quality at a significant cost in money, weight, and often slower operation.
How this parallels film formats
These digital categories map neatly onto film. APS-C sits below the classic 35mm frame. Full-frame matches 35mm exactly, which is why so many vintage lens focal lengths feel natural on it. Medium format digital echoes the 120 roll film cameras that produced 6x4.5, 6x6, and 6x7 negatives. Just as a 6x7 negative held more information and smoother tone than a 35mm frame, a medium format sensor holds an advantage over full-frame today.
Which should you choose?
Choose based on what you shoot and how you carry gear. If reach and budget matter most, APS-C is a genuinely excellent choice that many pros still use professionally. If you want the most flexible all-round system with the deepest lens selection, full-frame is the sensible default. If ultimate image quality for print and studio work is the goal and budget is secondary, medium format rewards you. No format is universally best; the right sensor is the one that fits your subjects, your back, and your wallet.
Lens equivalence and the hidden cost of aperture
One point that trips up many buyers is how aperture behaves across formats. An f/2.8 lens lets in the same amount of light per unit area regardless of sensor size, so exposure settings translate directly. What changes is depth of field. To achieve the same shallow background blur that a full-frame 50mm f/1.8 delivers, an APS-C shooter would need roughly a 33mm lens at about f/1.2, which is larger, rarer, and more expensive. This is why the apparent savings of a smaller sensor can shrink once you chase the same look. Conversely, when you actively want deep depth of field, as in landscape or macro work, a smaller sensor makes it easier and cheaper to keep everything in focus. Think about the images you want before assuming any format is simply cheaper.
Weight, travel, and the camera you actually carry
The best sensor is the one attached to a camera you are willing to bring. A full medium format kit can weigh several kilograms once you add lenses, while an APS-C mirrorless body with a compact prime slips into a jacket pocket. Photographers routinely overestimate how much resolution they need and underestimate how much weight discourages them from shooting. If a smaller, lighter system means you photograph more often and more spontaneously, that gain in frequency may outweigh any theoretical loss in ultimate quality. Match the format to your life, not just to a spec sheet.
