The Sunny 16 rule is the most useful piece of photographic folklore ever devised. It lets you set a correct exposure using nothing but your eyes and the weather. Master it and a dead battery, a broken meter or a fully mechanical camera stops being a problem. It is also the fastest way to truly understand how aperture, shutter and ISO work together.
The rule itself
On a bright, sunny day with hard-edged shadows, set your aperture to f/16 and your shutter speed to the reciprocal of your film's ISO. Load ISO 100 film and the base exposure is f/16 at 1/100 (use the nearest speed, 1/125). Load ISO 400 and it is f/16 at 1/400 (use 1/500 or 1/400 if your camera has it). That single relationship is the whole foundation.
Reading the light
Sunny 16 is really a scale, and f/16 is just the sunny end of it. As the light softens, you open the aperture to let in more light while keeping the same shutter speed:
- f/16 — Bright sun: distinct, hard shadows.
- f/11 — Slight overcast: shadows with soft edges.
- f/8 — Overcast: shadows barely visible.
- f/5.6 — Heavy overcast: no shadows at all.
- f/4 — Open shade or sunset: subject in shadow under open sky.
The trick to remembering it is the shadows on the back of your own hand. Sharp shadow means f/16. Soft shadow means f/11 or f/8. No shadow means open up further. The strength of the shadow is your meter.
Special cases worth memorising
- Snow and bright sand: so reflective they act like extra light. Close down to f/22, or treat them as one stop brighter than sunny.
- Backlight: when the sun is behind your subject, open up one to two stops so the face is not a silhouette.
- Golden hour: the hour after sunrise and before sunset needs roughly one to two stops more exposure than midday sun.
How to practise Sunny 16
The rule only becomes useful when it is automatic, and that takes deliberate reps. Try this routine: before every frame for a week, guess the exposure by eye first, then confirm it with your camera's meter or a phone app. Note when you were right and by how much you were wrong. Within a couple of hundred frames your guesses will land within half a stop of correct almost every time. Negative film's wide latitude means even a full stop off usually produces a perfectly printable negative, so the stakes while learning are low.
Why it still matters
Meters break, batteries die in the cold, and some of the best mechanical cameras never had a meter to begin with. Sunny 16 makes you independent of all of that. It also trains your eye to see light as exposure values rather than as a vague impression of brightness, which improves your metered shooting too. Even photographers who always carry a meter use Sunny 16 as a sanity check against readings that seem wrong.
The exposure triangle behind the rule
Sunny 16 works because exposure is a fixed relationship between three variables: aperture, shutter speed and ISO. In bright sun the total light is roughly constant, so the rule locks two of them — aperture at f/16, shutter at 1/ISO — and any equivalent combination gives the same exposure. That means f/16 at 1/500 equals f/11 at 1/1000 equals f/8 at 1/2000. You are free to trade aperture for shutter speed to control depth of field or freeze motion, as long as you move both in opposite directions by the same number of stops.
Adjusting aperture versus shutter
When you open up for softer light you have a choice: keep the shutter fixed and open the aperture, or keep the aperture fixed and slow the shutter. For a static landscape you might hold a small aperture for depth of field and let the shutter drop. For a moving subject you hold a fast shutter and open the aperture instead. Sunny 16 gives you the base exposure; the exposure triangle tells you how to reshape it for the picture you want without changing the total light.
Indoors and artificial light
Sunny 16 is an outdoor daylight rule, but its logic extends indoors as a rough guide. A brightly lit interior might sit four to five stops darker than open sun, which for ISO 400 lands near f/2.8 at 1/60 — right at the edge of handholding. This is exactly why fast lenses and faster film exist. Once you feel the gap between sunlight and room light in stops, you understand instantly why an indoor shot needs a tripod, a flash or ISO 800 film.
Building the habit
The final step is to stop calculating and start seeing. Experienced Sunny 16 shooters glance at the light, register 'bright sun, f/16', and set the camera in one motion. Get there by narrating the light to yourself all day, even without a camera: hard shadows, f/16; soft shadows, f/8; shade, open up. The rule stops being arithmetic and becomes the way you see.
