Angle of view calculator
How wide does a lens see on your format?
About this tool
Angle of view describes how much of a scene a lens takes in, measured as an angle. Enter a focal length and a film format, and this tool returns the diagonal and horizontal field of view in degrees. Use it to compare how wide or narrow a lens will feel on different cameras before you shoot.
How to use it
- Select the film format to set the frame dimensions used in the calculation.
- Enter the lens focal length in millimetres.
- Read the diagonal and horizontal angle of view in degrees.
FAQ
Why report both diagonal and horizontal angles?
The diagonal figure is the traditional way lenses are described, while the horizontal figure better reflects the left-to-right coverage you actually frame. Seeing both makes it easier to picture the composition.
Does a shorter focal length always mean a wider view?
For a fixed format, yes: shorter focal lengths give a wider angle of view. But the same focal length is wide on a large format and narrow on 35mm, so format matters just as much.
