Why does the colour still look off?
Colour negatives carry an orange base mask that a simple inversion cannot fully neutralise. The preview gets you a usable positive, but exact colour balance needs further correction in an editor.
Does it work for black-and-white negatives?
Yes. Black-and-white film has no orange mask, so a straight inversion gives a clean positive that usually needs only minor contrast tweaks.
