What FP4 Plus Is

Ilford FP4 Plus is a medium-speed black and white negative film rated at ISO 125. It is a traditional cubic-grain emulsion with roots going back decades in the FP line, updated as the current Plus version. It sits between Ilford's slow Pan F Plus and faster HP5 Plus, offering a balance of fine grain, high sharpness, and broad flexibility that makes it a mainstay for landscape, studio, and fine-art photographers working in 35mm, 120, and sheet film.

Tonal Character

FP4 Plus is known for a long, smooth tonal scale and a beautifully gradual transition from highlight to shadow. It has a slightly lower contrast baseline than a T-grain film, which gives it a classic, rounded look with plenty of midtone separation. Skies, skin, and textured surfaces render with a gentle roll-off that many photographers describe as timeless. It responds strongly to developer choice and agitation, so you can dial it toward soft and delicate or crisp and contrasty depending on your process.

Grain and Sharpness

For a traditional-grain film the grain is fine and well controlled, finer than HP5 Plus and only a step behind slow films like Pan F. In 120 and larger it is essentially smooth, and even in 35mm it enlarges cleanly to substantial sizes. Sharpness and acutance are high, and the grain structure has a pleasing, organic quality rather than a clinical one. It is a superb choice when you want obvious film character without heavy grain.

Exposure Latitude and Metering Tips

FP4 Plus has excellent latitude and is very forgiving of exposure error, easily handling a stop or more of overexposure and holding shadow detail well. A common approach is to meter for the shadows and develop for the highlights, in the classic black and white manner. Many photographers rate it at ISO 100 for slightly richer negatives with fuller shadows. Its wide latitude and predictable curve make it an ideal film for learning the zone system and for controlled, thoughtful exposure.

Its moderate speed suits daylight, tripod work, and controlled lighting rather than fast action or dim interiors. In contrasty scenes its gentle curve helps hold both highlights and shadows, and in flat light careful development can add the punch you need. It is a thinking photographer's film that rewards deliberate shooting.

Processing Notes

FP4 Plus is one of the most developer-friendly films made, and it looks excellent in a wide range of chemistry. Ilford ID-11 and Kodak D-76 give a classic balanced result, Perceptol yields even finer grain with slightly reduced speed, and Ilfotec DD-X or Microphen boost effective speed. Rodinal is a popular choice for maximum sharpness and crisp, defined grain. Because it responds so predictably, it is easy to standardise your process and get repeatable negatives roll after roll.

Who Should Shoot It

Choose FP4 Plus if you want a fine-grained, flexible, classic-looking black and white film for considered work in good light, especially landscape, still life, and portraiture in medium or large format. It is also an outstanding film for learning development and the zone system thanks to its latitude and predictability. If you need more speed for handheld or low light, HP5 Plus is the natural partner, and for the very finest grain in bright light Pan F Plus goes further. For balanced, timeless black and white, FP4 Plus is hard to beat.
