The modern generation

Kodak T-Max and Ilford Delta represent the modern school of black and white film. Where Tri-X and HP5 use traditional cubic grain, these films use tabular or T-grain crystals, flat platelets that pack more silver into a given area. The result is finer grain, higher sharpness and a cleaner, more clinical look at any given speed. Both lines come in multiple speeds: Kodak offers T-Max 100 and T-Max 400 (plus the specialist T-Max P3200), while Ilford offers Delta 100, Delta 400 and Delta 3200.

Grain and sharpness

The headline advantage of both families is grain. A T-Max 400 negative looks dramatically finer than Tri-X 400, closer to what a slower traditional film would give, and T-Max 100 is one of the finest-grained, sharpest films you can buy. Delta films offer the same class of benefit: Delta 100 is superbly fine and sharp, and Delta 400 is noticeably cleaner than HP5. If you enlarge heavily, scan for big prints, or simply want the most detail per frame, these T-grain films are the tools for the job.

Tonality and contrast

Modern T-grain films are sometimes described as more clinical or less forgiving than the classics, and there is truth to it. They tend to have a more linear response and can look crisper and more contrasty, which suits precise, controlled work but gives less of the gritty organic character some photographers love. Between the brands, T-Max is often described as very neutral and highly tunable through development, while Delta is frequently praised for a slightly smoother, more gentle rendering of highlights and midtones. The differences are subtle and depend heavily on your developer.

Exposure and development

T-grain films are generally a little less tolerant of exposure error than Tri-X or HP5, so metering matters more. They also tend to be more sensitive to development time and temperature; a small change in agitation or timing shows up more clearly than it would with a classic emulsion. This is not a weakness so much as a demand for consistency. Kodak's own T-Max developer is designed to get the most from T-Max films, and Ilford's DD-X is a popular match for Delta, though both films work in many developers.

The high-speed options

Both lines include a specialist high-speed film. T-Max P3200 and Delta 3200 are push-friendly films aimed at very low light. It is worth knowing that both have a true native sensitivity lower than their name suggests and are designed to be rated and pushed toward 3200 in development, delivering usable images in near darkness with the pronounced grain that comes with the territory.

Which to choose

  • Choose T-Max for maximum neutrality and fine grain, and if you want a film you can precisely tune through careful development.
  • Choose Delta for a slightly gentler tonal rendering with the same fine-grain, high-sharpness benefits.
  • Pick the 100 speed for landscapes, studio and any tripod work where you want the ultimate in fine grain and detail.
  • Pick the 400 speed for a versatile everyday film that is far cleaner than a classic 400.

In practice the choice between T-Max and Delta comes down to brand preference, developer availability and the subtle tonal signature you like best, rather than any decisive gap in quality.
