Provia 400X was Fujifilm's ISO 400 E-6 transparency — remarkably fine-grained for its speed, with vivid yet natural colour. Discontinued in 2013, it remains the fastest quality slide film ever made and is now a sought-after collector's stock.
Character & look
400X delivered saturation close to Provia 100F but with two extra stops of speed, opening slide shooting up to dimmer light and action. Grain was tight for a 400 chrome, colour was punchy without going cartoonish, and it pushed cleanly to 800 and 1600. As a slide film its latitude is still narrow, rewarding careful metering.

Shooting & development tips
Being long discontinued, check expiry and storage before buying, and expect to pay a premium. Meter carefully for highlights; if you find fresh-ish stock it pushes beautifully to EI 800 for indoor and evening work.
FAQ
Why is Provia 400X so expensive now?
Fujifilm discontinued it in 2013 and no comparable high-speed slide film replaced it, so remaining frozen stock trades at collector prices.
Is there any current ISO 400 slide film?
No mainstream one. Since 400X ended, the fastest widely available colour slide films are ISO 100 (Provia 100F, Velvia 100, Ektachrome E100), which is why 400X is still missed.
